Glasgow stricken by cholera
In 1853, Glasgow was stricken by cholera, supposedly brought in by a traveling circus. Although many residents fled town, the disease killed three fourths of those who remained. Shortly before the Civil War, disaster of another kind struck when the Louisville and Nashville Railroad bypassed Glasgow. Since railroads were vital to commerce, many towns died because of lack of access to the railroad. Glasgow solved the problem by building its own railroad; a spur line opened in 1870 that ran from the town to a connection approximately ten miles Northwest of town.
